Outlook 2010 will not work correctly if you try to update from an earlier version of Office 2007. Office 2007 SP1 fully supports Word, Excel, and Access 2007. In addition, Office 2010 introduces a new version of Outlook 2007, 2007 SP1, that is the default client for Office 2007 installations. You can no longer use a Microsoft Office 2007 installation as a stand-alone system.
The only way to get Office 2010 for Outlook 2007 is to use Office 2007 SP1.
Update: SP1 is available for download (and it's also part of Windows Update). The MSDN article about SP1 is located on the Outlook.com web site.

This is an important change. Most of the time, you will have to wait for MSDN to release SP1 or you can get it from Windows Update.

Some new features are only available in Office 2010. You can't upgrade directly from Office 2007 to Office 2010. You have to use SP1, which is freely available.
